The Art of the Choir in the Medieval and Early Modern Mediterranean World

The Department of History and Archaeology at the University of Cyprus invites proposals for an international hybrid conference exploring the display, performance, and experience of art in choir spaces across the Mediterranean between c. 1000 and 1600.
Bringing together scholars of the Latin West and the Byzantine East, the conference encourages comparative perspectives on how liturgy, artistic expression, devotional practice, and cultural exchange shaped the sacred space of the choir.
🎤 Keynote speakers:

• Prof. Sharon Gerstel (UCLA)
Topics include:
▪ Liturgical and paraliturgical uses of church choirs
▪ Choir furnishings and ritual
▪ Movement and access within choir precincts
▪ Display of relics and images
▪ Pilgrimage
▪ Digital approaches to the study of sacred space
📄 Submit an abstract of c. 300 words for a 20-minute paper in English by 30 September 2026.
