Giving to the Society

Donations

The SPBS was founded to further the study of the history and culture, language and literature of the Byzantine Empire and its neighbours. It publishes an annual Bulletin, and the conference papers of its popular annual Symposia; organises events such as lectures and study days; and makes grants to subsidise attendance at the Symposia and to support conference organisation, especially for graduate students. Please do consider giving a donation to support the Society and help us develop and secure the future of Byzantine Studies in the UK.

Legacies

By choosing to support the Society in your will, you can help to ensure the future development of Byzantine Studies both in the UK and abroad.

A gift of a legacy to the Society is tax-free in most instances and may reduce inheritance tax on your estate.

The Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies is a Registered Charity regulated by the Charity Commission (Charity Registration Number 289207).

We strongly recommend that you consult a solicitor in the drafting of your will. She/he should be able to adapt the following form of words to suit your needs:

‘I give to The Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies (Charity Number 289207) the sum of [insert words] OR a [in words] percentage share of the residue of my estate OR my [detail your specific item or items] to be used for the general purposes of the Society OR to be used for [detail the specific purpose you have] and I declare that written confirmation of receipt from the Honorary Treasurer of the Society shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my Executors and Trustees’.

If you already have a will, you can include a legacy to the Society by adding a codicil which your solicitor can prepare to reflect your intentions.
