The Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies (SPBS) is pleased to announce a Travel Grant for members wishing to attend the International Congress of Byzantine Studies, taking place in Vienna from 24 to 29 August 2026. This initiative forms part of the Society’s commitment to supporting research, fostering international collaboration, and enabling scholars to participate fully in key academic events in the field of Byzantine Studies.
The International Congress is a global gathering for Byzantine studies, bringing together academics, postgraduate researchers, independent scholars, and specialists from a wide range of disciplines. Through targeted travel support, SPBS seeks to enable participation in this major international forum.
Eligibility
Applications are welcomed from current SPBS members (or those who join the Society before applying).
The scheme is open to scholars at all stages who contribute to the field and would benefit from attending this major international gathering.

Funding Available
Applicants may request grants of up to £500, which may be used towards:
- Travel costs
- Accommodation
- Registration fees
- Other essential expenses related to attending the Congress
