Summer School: Greek (Classical/Byzantine) & Latin

Theological School of the Church of Cyprus, Nicosia, Cyprus, July 2020

Deadline: 15 May 2020

The Theological School of the Church of Cyprus (TSCC) launches in July 2020 the first Summer School in Cyprus focusing on the study of the classical languages. The Classical Languages Summer School (CLaSS), which will be held at the premises of TSCC in Nicosia, offers to participants the opportunity to study Greek (Classical /Byzantine) and Latin at a low cost on the beautiful island of Cyprus during Summer. Accommodation within a five-minute walking distance from the TSCC is also offered at a discounted price.

CLaSS will offer beginners and intermediate classes, in which participants will have the opportunity to engage with original Greek and Latin texts. All courses will be taught by experienced and enthusiastic academics and instruction will be held in English. Instruction for each course will be 30 teaching hours. Interested students may choose one of the following routes: 1) traditional, face-to-face classes* 2) online classes.

*Even though we are all deeply affected by the coronavirus outbreak, we do hope that circumstances will get improved by this Summer. However, if due to travel restrictions related to Covid-19, participants will not be able to travel to Cyprus in July, we are planning to run the “traditional” classes fully online by using Microsoft’s Teams.

CLaSS is primarily aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students in any discipline of the Humanities (e.g. Classics, History, Theology, Byzantine Studies) but it is also open to postdoctoral researchers, academics, teachers, or any other interested individuals (18+) who would like to learn Greek (Classical/Byzantine) or Latin from scratch or improve existing skills. As well as intensive tuition over up to four weeks, CLaSS offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities and opportunities to visit unique sites of cultural, historical and archaeological significance on the island (for details see below). Mutatis mutandis several extra-curricular activities are also planned for the online classes.
